Because complex societies have various economic groups, they allow for highly specialized labor and and economic activity. These divisions make it possible to sustain a large and diverse society. There is a consumption of goods which provides various needed resources for an entire population, and a division of the possible workforce allows for scientific and technological advancements. An interesting effect of this specialization and production for a massive population is that a worker can become fairly dissociated from the goods he produces. He works to sustain a population and for an entity larger than himself; therefore, he is not intricately bound to the product he helps to produce.

A simple society, by contrast, has a low division of labor that is primarily only differentiated by factors such as gender and age.
