Malnutrition can manifest as undernutrition or overnutrition. There are four types of undernutrition: wasting (when the person is thinner than normal), stunting (when the person is shorter than normal), underweight, and vitamin and mineral deficiencies; the two main types of overnutrition are overweight and obesity.

Malnutrition is generally caused by poor diets or the inability of the body to absorb and process certain nutrients. There are numerous reasons why these occur, ranging from various health conditions (cancer, diseases that cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, liver diseases and defects, Crohn’s disease, and more), mental conditions (depression, schizophrenia, dementia and more), and physical conditions (poorly fitting dentures, physical disabilities which limit movement), as well as social problems and other inconveniences (such as low income, drug or alcohol addiction, and more).

Symptoms of malnutrition (undernutrition) include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Lack of appetite and lack of interest in food and beverages
  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Weak musculature
  • Frequent infections and long-lasting recovery periods
  • Depression
  • Poor concentration

Surgical wound healing refers to the process of healing wounds caused by surgical wounds or incisions. Nutrition is very important when it comes to wound healing, as it speeds up the recovery process; carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals promote wound healing, which is why healthy and balanced meals are imperative.

Some of the complications which might occur as a result of malnutrition in patients that are undergoing or have undergone surgery are weaker immune system, susceptibility to infections and poor clinical outcome in general.
