Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, has been living on an island in the Mediterranean with his daughter Miranda. Prospero's brother, Antonio, has taken away Prospero's dukedom with help from Alonso, the King of Naples. Prospero, who has magical, supernatural powers, orders his fairy servant, Ariel, to conjure a tempest--a storm--to cause a shipwreck of a vessel on which King Alonso is a passenger. At a banquet, Prospero reveals his true identity, and the repentant king restores his dukedom. Prospero frees Ariel from his slavery, and announces to the reader/audience that his magical powers are gone forever. There are several subplots; one concerns the monstrous Caliban; another features the romance between Ferdinand, one of the shipwreck survivors, and Miranda. They will return to Naples and be married.

Prospero used to be Duke of Milan but his evil brother stole the position from him and sent him off to die.  He did not die, but he and his daughter Miranda end up on this island.  Prospero becomes a magician and rules over the island (his subjects are Caliban and Ariel).

He makes a storm come up that strands the King of Naples, his son Ferdinand, Prospero's brother, and some others on the island.   While they are there, Ferdinand falls in love with Miranda.  Prospero uses his magic to make the King understand what a great wrong was done to Prospero.

All is forgiven and they leave the island.
