The answer to this question can be found in Chapter 5.
Even though Pew is blind, he is the leader of the pirates. The pirates are searching the inn at Pew’s orders when their lookouts warn them of danger approaching. There are riders coming down the road. The pirates flee, but Pew has no one to guide him. Pew starts to try to run away but hears the horses. He turns and falls into a ditch by the side of the road. When he gets up and tries to run away again, he runs directly under the horses and is killed.

At this Pew saw his error, turned with a scream, and ran straight for the ditch, into which he rolled. But he was on his feet again in a second and made another dash, now utterly bewildered, right under the nearest of the coming horses.
