In chapter five, Napoleon's nine ferocious dogs suddenly appear from the loft in the barn and chase Snowball off the farm. After Snowball flees the farm, the nine dogs surround Napoleon, who has just usurped power by force. Napoleon and his dogs station themselves on the raised platform overlooking the crowd of animals. Their raised position symbolically represents their authority with Napoleon acting as their absolute leader, which also represents the dictatorship forming on the farm. A dictatorship is an authoritarian form of government, where a country is ruled by a single leader with ultimate authority. Since the story is an allegory of the Russian Revolution and the early years of the Soviet Union, Napoleon's character represents Joseph Stalin, who ruled as a dictator with complete authority. Napoleon and the dogs' raised position on the platform correspond to their positions of authority. They look down on the masses, which are literally and figuratively beneath them. The other animals are not on equal footing with Napoleon and his dogs and instead occupy a lower social status than them, which relates to the general population's rank in a dictatorship.

In this situation, we will follow the allegory through to the symbols in the novel. The pigs would represent a group rising in power and the dogs would represent the hired force to keep the people in control. Whenever a dictator comes to power, he generally has to do so by force. The dogs being on the platform with the dogs represent the fact that the pigs have a protective group ready to defend them in case of revolt. Usually when people see an injustice like the rise of a dictator, at least some will question. If enough question, a revolution will begin, and an attempt to dethrone the ruling dictator will ensue.
