Is photography a form of art, and what characteristics would qualify it as one of the arts?
Photography is definitely an art form. That doesn’t mean that everyone who takes a picture is an artist, but photography is a medium that can be manipulated to achieve desired effects, which is what makes art possible.
Photographers can control what appears in the frame of their pictures, and, in some cases, control the arrangement of subjects in the frame. These choices allow the photographer to be creative in how they present their subject.
Photographers can also control the amount of light that enters the lens, which determines how the picture will look, and they can alter shutter speed, which affects and controls the focus.
Sometimes, just recognizing a great picture subject is an art form. You might know that you want to take a picture of an old house, but from what controlled angle and distance?
There’s a lot more to it than the old camera commercial that said, “just point and shoot.”
