Seizures occur due to abnormal discharges in the brain.  The brain uses electrochemical impulses to produce feelings, thoughts, and movements within the body.  When the electrochemical impulses are interupted the individual may experience strange sensations, emotions, and behavior.  Some individuals also experience convulsions, muscle spasms and loss of consciousness.

Individuals with seizures should always seek out medical treatment. "People with severe seizures that resist treatment have, on average, a shorter life expectancy and an increased risk of cognitive impairment, particularly if the seizures developed in early childhood. These impairments may be related to the underlying conditions that cause epilepsy or to epilepsy treatment rather than the epilepsy itself."

It is very important for a person who has seizures to see a doctor right away. There are many risks that are associated with seizures and it is important to find out why they are occurring for numerous reasons.

Say for example this person is driving and has a seizure while driving. Not only are they placing themselves in extreme danger, but those around them as well. In addition, it is suggested that people who have seizures do not swim or take baths because of drowning issues.

The long term effects of a person who suffers from seizures can be very damaging, especially if they are not seeking medical attention. Most of the time seizures can be controlled through the use of medications.
