Percy definitely exhibits many heroic character traits throughout The Lightning Thief, but his willingness to risk himself to help others makes him stand out as a definite hero.  In the very beginning of the novel, Percy's mother is 'taken' to the Underworld when Percy fights the minotaur.  At first, Percy believes that she has died, but when he learns that she may yet live, he vows to save her.  Despite many difficulties and trials, Percy works determinedly to rescue his mother--at great personal cost and risk to himself.  He willingly enters the Underworld knowing that he may very well have to sacrifice his own life to save hers; then when Hades offers him a deal to save his mother but would endanger many others, Percy declines, deciding to put others' needs before his own personal agenda. That kind of selfless act is incredibly heroic.

A hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

In this case, Percy has noble qualities such as perseverance and resilience, especially mental resilience in this case to overcome his ADHD. Percy is also definitely portrayed as courageous in the book as shown in his encounters with Medusa, the escaping from White Lotus casino.

Potentially, the outstanding achievements could be retrieving the lightning bolt , rescuing his mother in the greater sense and less obviously, potentially the way he adapts to life as a demigod and even the fact that with the assistance of Annabeth and Grover, Medusa was killed. This should also be an outstanding achievement shared by the three of them.

He is able to be resilient and overcome his ADHD to complete his missions. He puts others' safety above his.
