Shortly after the Jews occupy the small ghetto, Hungarian and German soldiers force them into tightly packed cattle cars, which transport them to Birkenau. During the ride to Birkenau, Elie recalls a traumatized woman named Mrs. Schächter, who hallucinates and begins yelling about massive, uncontrollable flames. Mrs. Schächter's visions end up being prophetic once the Jewish prisoners arrive at Birkenau and witness the fire rising from the concentration camp's furnaces.
