On page 145 in 'The Great Gatsby', what subtle events are occurring starting from "They weren't happy..."?

First, neither Tom nor Daisy touched the food or drink on the table at which they were sitting. Imagine a table full of food on a day when way too many events took place. Most people would be scarfing down everything in sight. There are few things in this world that cause people to cease from eating when they have reason to be hungry.

Between Tom and Daisy, there must be a sort of forgiveness for all that has transpired between the two of them in their cheating relationships for the text reports:

There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture...

Then, Gatsby waiting for Nick checks in to see if Tom has done anything inappropriate to Daisy.

Nick smoothes over the situation and resolves Gatsby's fear that Daisy could be hurt, but fails to report the scene of a marriage in repair to Gatsby.
