In many ways, gaming has been very positive for native Americans. Given that many tribes had been removed from rich and productive lands and given only in exchange lands unsuitable for productive economic activity as reservations, poverty has been an ongoing issue on reservations. Gaming has brought in sorely needed income, often accompanied by infrastructure improvements including roads and medical services.
On the negative side, casinos have made alcohol much more readily available on reservations and the income has not always been spent wisely. Also, casinos encourage gambling, which is not always good for gamblers. Although many people can gamble safely, and not lose more money than they can afford, gambling addicts, like alcoholics, can often destroy themselves and their families with their addictions.
