The Outsiders has a theme of appearance, how can that topic be explained, in terms of an essay. Thanks a lot :) Not only a physical appearance, e.g.: the differences between the Greasers and Socs- but they are quite similar deep inside.

I think that you have identified one of the major things that shows that appearances are not what really matter.  The conversations between Ponyboy and Cherry really show that the two groups are not that different.

I think you can also talk about Ponyboy himself.  You can talk about him as a greaser and a gangbanger, but at the same time he is an athlete and is very into literature.  I suppose you could also say the same about Johnny.  He's also a gang member but loves Gone With the Wind and can quote Robert Frost.

As far as your essay, I would use the idea that things are not what they appear to be as my thesis.  Then I would fill out the body of my essay with examples like the ones I have just mentioned.
