Piliavin et al. psychological research -
The study outlined human behavior in terms of two social tendencies: Pluralistic ignorance and diffusion of responsibiity. The purpose was to determine what reasons motivate humans to act on behalf of others, as they are influenced by the actions of other people. In pluralistic ignorance,it was found that people who act peacefully in times of emergecies create a false sense of safety in others, which in turn pretend that the emergency is not happening. In diffusion of responsibility we see that humans tend to leave it to others to take action in the moment of an emergency, especially if the group is full of individuals. What this implies in terms of explaining murder is that, if some crime takes place, people will be least likely to report or come forward as witnesses if there was more people involved in a case. In other words, the study shows us that people tend to take less responsibility for their role in situations such as crime scenes or crime reporting, because there is a tendency to diffuse the responsibility on others.
