The two German countries were created after World War II in order to prevent Germany from being powerful, and to give both the Russians and Americans influence. One side was democratic and one was Communist. They were separated by the Berlin Wall. Eventually, the world outgrew communism and the wall, and it came down and made Germany unified.

There was a distinct social benefit, in that families long divided by the wall and the iron curtain could once again travel and see each other freely.  There was an economic benefit, immediately to those from the Eastern zones, which was they had gained a big brother with a lot of money to come in and invest in upgrading their technology and ways of life to Western standards. It gave them jobs and access to material goods.  It took a whole generation of young east Germans and gave them a real future to pursue

Some other benefits would be combined resources of both East and West Germany, reunited families which would create a higher moral among the countrymen, and increased successes with tourism, exports and imports.

The Iron Curtain was a political blockade supported by the Communist regime in East Germany and supported by the USSR. It was never popular with the German people. Eventually, with the decline and fall of the Soviet Union, and spurred by Hungary's opening of its borders, the time was right for the government to give the people what they had long wanted: A Germany which united all of their people.

It was reunited because Germans felt the split was artificial and wanted to be one country again.

It happened in this year because that is how long it took them to hammer out the details.  The process started in 1989 when Hungary opened the Iron Curtain and so East Germany would not longer be able to hold its people so effectively.

Most countries felt the crumbling block of the Iron Curtain, and for the most part, had trouble maintaining their economies and political systems. It was just a matter of time before the country would be reunited, but no one expected it to be so quickly.
