The writer of this blog does not explicitly discuss any previous experience he has had as a protestor.  Instead, he is implicitly comparing what he saw at the Occupy Melbourne protests to his overall impressions of what protests are like.  

The most important passage in the blog (in terms of your question) is this one:

... would it something that succumbed to the same infighting, lack of direction and mixed messages of other protests?

In other words, the author has not been very impressed by other protests that he has presumably seen.  He wonders if the Occupy protest will be like those.  He is presumably saying this so as to make the reader be impressed when he concludes that the Occupy protest is not like other protests.
