In the novel, Of Mice and Men, why does Whit become so interested in his magazine?

One of the reasons Whit is interesed in the western magazine is because of a letter to the editor written by a farm-hand who had worked at the ranch three months before. Even though the men scoff at the magazine and the heroes it portrays, secretly they wish to be like the men.
