On the surface, it would appear that Belle and Scarlett are quite unalike, and in terms of their social positions in the community, that is certainly true. However, as women they share some striking similarities. Both care little about the opinions or the approval of others. Both have a head for business in a time when women were not expected to make their own way and when being involved in business enterprises was somewhat scandalous for a woman. Finally, both Belle and Scarlett are strong women, able to stand up to their circumstances and make the most of their assets.
