"No religion would ever condone war" - Do you agree or disagree?
This is a typical SWAWOS GCSE R.S. question. Using either Christianity or Islam, are there any points you can make for the pro or con side of this argument? 2/3 points for each side would be excellent.

It may be that no religion should ever condone war, but it is clear that religions do condone it.
There is evidence to suggest that Christianity should never condone war. After all, one of Jesus's sayings was that people should, as we now put it "turn the other cheek" to those who attack them. Christians are told in the same place in the Gospel of Matthew not to resist those who want to do evil to them. This is in the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus also said "blessed are the peacemakers." These can all be seen as evidence that Christianity should not condone war.
But Christianity has condoned war. The most obvious example of this is the Crusades. These wars, along with many within Europe over things like the Reformation or, before that, the schism where there were two popes, have been condoned and even promoted by Christian leaders.
Therefore, while we may say that an ideal Christianity would not condone war, it is clear that actual Christianity has done so.
