Another idea might be the way that people around the world, especially in the United States, responded to the Apollo 11 landings. It is one of those moments where everyone remembers where they were when they saw it, and writing an article about reactions might be interesting. 

Well, there are plenty of things you could write your article about.  Apollo 11 was a major milestone in mans attempts at space exploration.  The Great Space Race was basically a competition between the two super-powers that existed at that period of time, those being the United States and the former Soviet Union.  The Soviets iniated the push into space, and were first in just about every category of space exploration.  It is a significant crowning achievment that the United States came from behind and landed a manned spacecraft on the surface of the moon before the Soviets did.  If I were you, I would write my article detailing how the American space program went from nothing to something in terms of accomplshments leading up to Apollo 11.  Another idea you could write about would be the decline of the Soviet space program after the success of the Apollo space program.
