I need to write a comparative essay on the writing methods of two authors, what aspects should I compare?

The two books are both about human rights, one from global perspective and one from Confucian.

I think that there are several ways in which you can approach such a task.  The first step in this process would be to check with your task description or rubric and/ or your instructor or professor to ensure that you are following the procedure or methodology specifically outlined.  After this reflection and discussion, I think that you can analyze what the human rights position from a global perspective is and what defines this paradigm.  This might include the explanation and description of characteristics and applications from this mindset.  Doing the same from the Confucian point of view can then be undertaken.  The last phase of the paper might involve identifying points of convergence and any potential areas of divergence in each paradigm.

The methods you analyze and compare between the two works depend on the two works.  To compare is to tell the similarities, so you have to find similarities between the two.  No one on enotes can really tell you what to compare without knowing what the works are and without reading them.  You need a basis of comparison--methods that are truly similar in both writers.

That said, some of the methods that might be similar in the two works follow:

  • Organization or Form
  • Diction, or word choice
  • Use of Figurative Language
  • Syntax, or word order/sentence structure
  • Purpose
  • Use of sources
  • Tone
  • Effectiveness

These are some basic elements one can compare to find similarities.
