I need to write an analytical essay for the theme "Courage is doing what is right even when the odds of succeeding are poor." I have to describe development through specific characters, having two examples for each. I chose Mrs. Dubose, but I'm struggling finding another example besides her battle with her morphine addiction. If anyone could give another example that would be SO helpful! I don't mind if it is from the same area but I need another quote supporting a semi-different idea than what I have now which is explaining her battle againt pain-killers, knowing either way she will die.
Mrs. Dubose is an interesting choice. For your second example, have you considered looking at Atticus's defense of Tom Robinson? Almost every white person (and thus, every voter) in Maycomb trash-talks him long before the trial, during it, and long after it. He takes the case anyway, knowing he cannot win. He explains this to Scout in chapter nine with: "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win." By this, he refers the South's history of slavery, the Civil War, then the South's ongoing refusal to treat African Americans as people worthy of the same respect and rights (including a right to a fair trial of one's peers).
