One interesting way of approaching this assignment is to do a comparison of mass media coverage of a particular event or issue across different national or linguistic traditions. For example, you could compare the francophone and anglophone reactions to the Canadian election currently in progress by reading both French (Quebec) and English (perhaps choosing one specific province) coverage of some individual candidate of party (the NDP, for example). Alternatively, you could look at the difference in coverage of some aspect of the Canadian election by media inside and outside Canada.
Your analysis could be quantitative, for example, looking at the number of times the names of different candidates are mentioned over a week in two different newspapers, or more rhetorical, looking at the sorts of ways in which they are described.
