I'm supposed to write a paper pretending that I am a slave and have found a piece of paper and a pencil with which to write how I became a slave. So far I've written:
I was sitting there at the river bank when everything went pitch black and I started to move. I realized I was in a bag. about 2 days past and they opened it. I thought it was one of my people but it was a different man. He was sort of a peach color. I then realized he was a white man. He took out a whip and threatened to whip me if I didn't get out.
Where should I go from here?
First, take a look at what you have. Historically slaves were not captured by white slavers but by other Africans. African slavers from the coast went into the interior and captured other Africans and sold them to European slave traders. Getting these captured slaves to the coast was a brutal process; slaves were chained, beaten and starved as they were taken to the coast. Many did not survive the journey.
Your next step is going to be discussing the trip across the Atlantic, called the Middle Passage. Slaves were packed tightly onto ships with only about four square feet of space. They were chained to each other to try to prevent them from jumping overboard. About twenty percent of slaves died on the journey to the Americas.
You also need to decide where the slave you are writing about is going. Slaves captured from Africa went to Brazil, the Caribbean and the United States. Life in each of these areas was different for slaves.
