- T.J. ROBS THE STORE. T.J. is lured into joining the Simms' brothers on a drive into Strawberry. The Simms' promise to buy T.J. the pearl-handled pistol he wanted, but once inside, the Simms' rob the store and beat the owner.
- THE FIRE. When lightning strikes and sets the cotton fields on fire, everyone--black and white--join together to save the crops. The fire helps to save T.J.'s life, since a lynch mob had gathered to punish T.J. for his part in the store robbery; instead, they join in putting out the fire.
