I need to know about strange initiatives to reduce pollution.
Methane gas from dairy farms and feedlots are now being collected in several areas for the methane gas, which is then burned to produce electricity. This prevents the methane, a greenhouse gas, from being released into the atmosphere, and it burns relatively cleanly.
I don't know if this is unusual or not, but it would be drastic and unpopular in the US. London started charging a very high toll to drivers who wanted to enter the downtown area - not on just one road or bridge, all of the roads and bridges. This was to reduce traffic, the need for new road construction and pollution from carbon emissions. So far, it's working.
Here it is, a good unusual example.
In Italy, city Castelbuono, donkeys are responsible for waste collection.
The initiative is belonging to city mayor, that replaced all the garbage trucks with donkeys, hoping thereby to reduce pollution and, of course, city maintenance costs.
Donkeys are wandering the city, with two sacks in the back, collecting residues. Quadrupeds are working in two shifts, 6 hours per each day, six days a week, being permanently accompanied by an employee of sanitation company.
The idea was not greeted well by the city residents who have seen this idea as a back in time and not an evolution of their town.
