I need help with my first body paragraph for an essay about the Compromise of 1850.
essay prompt: Evaluate the extent in which two of the following were successful in preserving the Union prior to the Civil War.
-comp. of 1850 -im doing this one and I need help with this one
-Kansas-Nebraska Act -and this one
-Election of 1860
My topic sentence for the body paragraph number 1 (the one I need help on goes:
The Compromise of 1850 had a temporal success in easing tension, yet was fatally plagued by the Fugitive Slave Act, ultimately failing in preserving the Union.
-from there I need help on evidence and analyzing.
First of all, "temporal" is not the word you want here. The word you want is "temporary." They don't mean the same thing. Other than that, this is a good thesis statement.
What I would talk about here is the degree of conflict that was going on before the compromise was passed. There was so much friction after the Mexican-American War that there was talk of secession. Even the compromise itself had a hard time getting through Congress because of the conflict. So, the compromise eased that tension.
Then, you should go on to talk about the conflict that arose of the Fugitive Slave Act. You might mention the case of Anthony Burns and/or Shadrach Minkins. You could even mention Uncle Tom's Cabin in connection to this. You could then say that these tensions ended up making things worse than they had been before.
