I need help with an acrostic poem for the character of JAY GATSBY from the novel The Great Gatsby.

Write an acrostic describing elements of the character, find a quote (cite it) that is significant about the character, and describe your character's purpose in the story (explain why he is important to the plot).

ACROSTIC:

Jokes around with the term "old sport"

Absolutely obsessed with Daisy Buchanan

Young and in love with Daisy

"Great" Gatsby

American Dream (gone horribly wrong)

Tom Buchanan, his arch enemy

Symbol of "The Roaring Twenties"

Bootlegger extaordanaire

Yellow car brings about his downfall

QUOTE:  Nick speaks of Gatsby in Chapter 1:  "It was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which is not likely I shall ever find again.  No--Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and shortwinded elations of men" (2).

CHARACTER'S PURPOSE:  Gatsby's purpose in the story is to discover and win Daisy Buchanan.  Every single thing he has done in his life (after their first meeting) has been to attain that unattainable goal.  In regards to his importance to the plot, Gastby IS the plot of this story.  It is primarily a story about Gatsby achieving the American Dream, but in doing so, is unable to attain the one thing he wants:  Daisy Buchanan.  She was his ultimate goal:  one that leads directly to his death and funeral attended by no one.
