Sharon Draper's novel is an exploration of the personal and emotional repercussions of a drunk driving accident that claims the life of Robert Washington, Hazelwood High School's start basketball player. The book then focuses on the emotional and personal reactions and realities faced by the other three teens who were also in the fatal accident—Andy, Tyrone, and B.J. All three deal with their guilt and the emotional rollercoaster they feel in different ways.

The structure of the novel is also quite interesting. Rather than being told in a single narrative, the book is a multi-genre approach to storytelling, including bits of poetry, assignments for English class, newspaper accounts of the accident, etc. all shedding new light and perspectives on the accident and its effects.
