I need help getting started writing a paper on the summary and statement of the central idea of The Lottery.

I've order a book but it wont be here until the middle of the week. I know I want to use the idea of the towns people are afraid of change and dont want to give up traditions. I just need a "jump-start" to get going.

First of all, you need to outline your idea of the town's fear of change and keeping the lottery tradition to see if you have enough to say about this being the central idea of "The Lottery".  What will the three body paragraphs be about?  Choosing 3 townspeople to show their attitude toward change?  Choosing 3 people who participate in the ritual and why? Three reasons why the townspeople are so afraid when other cities have give up the lottery tradition?  Which examples or quotes from the story will back up your ideas?  Then go back and figure out how to introduce the main idea you intend to prove with your 3 body paragraphs.  Remember that the thesis statement must allow you to discuss all three ideas which will be the 3 body paragraphs. You could begin your introductory paragraph with several ideas such as the negative reaction the story produced when it was first published, or the idea of traditions we follow today and would a lottery be accepted in a small town today, or what influence several people in a small town can have over the whole town's behavior.  Good luck with your paper.
