Sodapop is Ponyboy’s brother.  His parents had imaginative practices for naming their children.

An important quote from Soda is his reaction when Ponyboy asks him his feelings about fighting.

"I don't know." He looked at me, puzzled. "It’s action. It’s a contest. Like a drag race or a dance or something." (ch 10, p. 133)

This quote demonstrates that Soda does not feel ill will toward the Socs, but considers fighting sport.

Ponyboy really likes his older brother Soda.  He feels that Soda understands him, and describes him as “always happy-go-lucky and grinning” (ch 1, p. 2).  Soda is a kid at heart, and Ponyboy says he will never grow up.  Soda is “one of a kind” and “movie-star kind of handsome” (ch 1, p. 7).  Soda understands everybody, and enjoys life.  He does not have to drink to have fun, and he does not have to crack a book to be smart.
