A flashback is a literary device where an author describes past events in the present.  There is a flashback on the second page of Chapter 1, when Brat, who in the present is "twelve or thirteen", tries to recall when she was a baby.  Although she does not remember ever having been cared for by anyone, she "assume(s) that "someone...must have borne her and cared for her...and changed her diapers when they reeked".  There is a second flashback on the next page, four paragraphs later.  In this instance, Brat remembers the boys in the villages she has wandered through in the past teasing and tormenting her.

On the second page of Chapter 17, there is another flashback in which Brat, called "Alyce" now, relives "in her mind" the various babies and animals she has delivered over recent years.  This memory helps her realize her true calling in life as "a midwife's apprentice with a newborn hope of being someday a midwife herself".
