The name of the protagonist in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is Percy Jackson.  The author of the series, Rick Riordan, incorporates meaningful names like Percy's, for example, to allude to ancient Greek mythology or further develop the character through connotation.  Percy reveals to the reader that his full name is actually Perseus; his mother named him after the famous character, Perseus, a demigod and hero from Greek mythology, who was best known for slaying Medusa.

Percy's name is incredibly significant to his characterization, suggesting that he too has the potential to become a true hero like the original Perseus.
