My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell is an autobiographical account of his family's sojourn on the Greek Island of Corfu. Although he is writing as an adult, he attempts to reconstruct the viewpoint of a child, albeit with a very sophisticated voice. Even in childhood, Durrell was a dedicated naturalist, exploring the flora and fauna of the island, and carefully and minutely observed the natural world around him. His world was very much a cosmopolitan and extremely sophisticated one, consisting of many expatriates as well as leading figures on Corfu, as well as many other colorful characters.
