Is the movie "Apocalypse Now" true to the book "Heart of Darkness? That is to say... are they similar enough to have the same themes and motifs

In the sense of themes and motifs, yes Coppola's film is "true" to the novella. What makes them different is, of course, primarily the setting. Apocolypse Now is not meant to be a depiction of Heart of Darkness, but it is a kind of modernization of the story--same basic plot, same basic characters, but transported to a different location and a different era.
