The murderer comes to the guesthouse where snowbound visitors are trapped. He calls himself Sergeant Trotter and says he is a police investigator. In fact, he is only pretending to be a police officer.

In reality, the murderer is named Georgie Corrigan, the oldest of three Corrigan children who were abused by their foster caregivers. The youngest died as a result of the abuse. Georgie Corrigan is now murdering the people he considers complicit in his youngest sibling's death. These include Maureen Lyon, one of the foster parents who abused the Corrigans. She served jail time, but now is free. Corrigan also murders Mrs. Boyle, one of the magistrates who assigned the Corrigan children to the Lyons. Georgie is exposed while trying to murder Mollie, a teacher who never responded to a letter...
