This is a fairly broad topic that can be supplemented with examples from personal reading.  I think that you might have several approaches in answering such a question.  One such approach would be to identify three specific novels and analyze the themes raised and the techniques used to illuminate these ideas.  I think that your first portion of the paper could be used to introduce the topic.  In this section, you would identify the need for authors to convey their themes through literary techniques, briefly identifying how this is essential to the intellectual development of their work.  The next phase of the paper would be to highlight specific novels' use of techniques.  This part might have to be from your own experience, because given the prompt, it sounds like you have to identify a novel with thematic importance and strong use of technique to bring these into fruition.  I am not sure that any other approach here will work other than your own reading background.  Certainly, I would use novels' use of narration, point of view, dialogue, frame story elements (if applicable), development of character through different tools, amongst other techniques.  Identify three novels and be able to clearly explain how their themes are enhanced through the techniques used.  The concluding phase to the work might be something where you are able to examine the importance and significance of author's techniques to their ideas, and that both are dependent on one another for a cohesive and strong work product.
