Dave Sanders is a young kid who desperately wants to prove that he is deserving of respect and fear. He is picked on a lot, and wants to be able to stand up for himself and be the one in the position of power instead of always being the victim. He is a victim seeking revenge and recompense. He is the bullied who wants to fight back but is too scared to do it with his own strength. He is insecure about himself, and hoping to make a statement.
Dave is also seeking independence from the adults that control his life. His mother and father keep a tight reign on him, and all of the work that he does in the fields goes to his parents to pay their boss. His entire life is dictated by others, and he wants to exert his independence. He doesn't like his life, he doesn't like the choices that others are making for him, and wants to assert his own right to be his own person.
Unfortunately for Dave, he goes about attaining all of these desires in the wrong way, and it ends up making things worse. Lying, cheating, stealing and shirking responsibility just shows how incapable one is of deserving respect or autonomy. I hope that those thoughts helped; good luck!
