Think of symbols as representing something else such as the American flag being a symbol of freedom.  If you thing of Edgar Allan Poe's story, "The Tell-Tale Heart", the buried heart of the old man could be used as a symbol of the narrator's guilt or insanity.  What the symbol represents in the story is not always found in an exact place in the story, but rather implied in the story which means that you have to read between the lines or infer the answer.  Now, think of the story you are currently working with.  Pick out two things which you believe are symbols in the story.  Now, make a list of three possible answers for each of the two symbols as to what they could stand for in the context of the story.  Choose your best answer and explain to yourself why you think this one is the best answer for that symbol.
