Describe/list which cellular structures would be grouped into the following categories according to general function: Control of the cell, Manufacture of macromolecules, Cellular maintenance, Energy processing, Support.
For control of the cell, it is most definitely the nucleus. Within the nucleus are the chromosomes and genes consisting of DNA which house the genetic code, the blueprint for the cell to carry out its life processes. For support, the cell wall is important in organisms that have one, such as plants. The cytoskeleton also helps maintain the cell's integrity and shape. Cellular maintenance has to do with the lysosomes which can help to break down old cells and cell structures, and have enzymes which enable food particles to be digested. The ribosomes have to do with cell maintenance as they are the sites of protein synthesis and the process of translation occurs there resulting in new structural proteins, as well as enzymes and hormones being manufactured. Ribosomes are also important in the manufacture of macromolecules, which is really what the production of proteins technically is. Also, in plants the chloroplasts can produce glucose which can form macromolecules like starch for storage in the roots, stems or leaves of plants. The Golgi Apparatus packages and processes macromolecules for intracellular and extracellular transport and the ER helps to transport these molecules within the cell. Energy processing has to do with the life function of respiration which occurs in the mitochondria, located in the cytoplasm of cells. Here, glucose and oxygen combine and ATP are produced--a high energy compound that provides cells with energy.
