In the short story 'The Necklace' by Guy De Maupassant, we see the a couple whose life chances are ruined by debt and the loss of freedom and independence which that brings. An interesting character for you to describe would be Madame Loisel because it is she who first risks the couple's happiness by her desire for an expensive necklace with which to impress others who are wealthy compared to her.
When describing her, you could talk about her background and her husband's inability to keep her in the standard of life that she feels she deserves. She is now coping with a life of comparitive poverty and you could think about the sort of feelings she is going through. Perhaps inferiority, humiliation, envy, jealousy, greed and eternal dissatisfaction might be some of them - look for examples to quote. It might also be interesting to note that her own precious gift (her natural beauty) seems to be of no comfort to her. Think about how else she could have improved the couple's economic situation (through working or enterprise?) and find someone to compare her with in that regard. It is perhaps fitting that these measures are what she is driven to in the end anyway. Debt, borrowing and taking desperate risks to get what we think we have to have are very topical in the news of the recession right now and you could think about how socieities, not just couples, are affected.
