Howard Florey is best known for his contribution to the development of penicillin. Penicillin is a remarkable invention. It changed the course of human history, in a lot of ways. Here are some examples.
1. People are much less likely die of infection. Before antibiotics, it was common to get an infection that we would think of as minor today and die.
2. Diseases do not spread to as many or as quickly. If a person is a carrier of an infection, and it is not treated, than infection spreads to others. This can lead to an epidemic, and many more people can die.
3. People do not become crippled by infections as easily. Some infections cripple people for life if they are not treated immediately. Antibiotics saved many people from having their entire lives affected by becoming crippled by the disease.
4. Drug-resistant strains of bacteria developed. Unfortunately, penicillin and its derivatives were seen as a wonder drug and prescribed to people even when they did not have a bacterial infection or when the infection was minor. The wide prescribing of antibiotics, even in needed cases, led to new generations of bacteria developing that were resistant to the drugs.
