Frost felt trapped by traditional rules of poetry. He wanted to express his voice in his way, and was particular about it. What I am always struck with is his reverence for simple life. I think that by this point in his career he was longing for that simplicity any more. He loved nature and country life.

Perhaps we can infer a lot of what was going on in Frost's life through an examination of the poem itself. It is clear that the silken tent of the poem could be taken symbolically to refer to his poetic talent and the ropes that pull on him are the various pulls and responsibilities of life. This is a theme that crops up in other poems, such as "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." Therefore perhaps we can infer that this poem was written at a time when Frost was struggling to maintain his focus on his artistic talent and felt as if that stability or focus was threatened by forces and responsibilites exterior to his inner art.

I understand that he wrote this poem in 1942 - that would be in the midst of WWII.  How did this play in his choice of a Tent for symbolism?  Do you think it is significant to what was goining on in the country with the war?  Tents set up camp.  Tell me your thoughts.
