Several groups of people live in the Himalayas including the Sherpas, the Kashmirs, and the Ladakhis. Three religions have equal dominance in the Himalayas: Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam. Occupations vary. The Ladakhis are primarily occupied with agriculture and pasturing yaks, goats and sheep. Goats produce milk and cheeses and provide cashmere for clothing. Other occupations have been made famous by the lives of Buddhist monks and Hindu ascetics and of course by the Dali Lama who is in exile from China.
