The length of a rectangle is 5 inches more than its width. If the width is denoted by W, the length is W + 5.

The perimeter of a rectangle is 2*(length + width). As the perimeter of the rectangle is 42, the width is W and the length is W + 5, we get:

42 = 2*(W + W + 5)

=> 42 = 2*(2W + 5)

=> 21 = 2W + 5

=> 2W = 16

=> W = 8

L = W + 5 = 13

The length of the rectangle is 13 inches and the width is 8 inches.
