Dimitri realizes that he is in love with Anna upon his return to Moscow. It is in Moscow as he resumes his "regular" life that he realizes that something is not right in what he is doing in terms of its banal and conventional nature. Something has changed in him from before and that something is feelings he has developed for Anna:
...everything that was of interest and importance to him, everything that was essential to him, everything about which he felt sincerely and did not deceive himself ... was going on concealed from others; while all that was false... went on in the open.’
This condition in which that which is true is concealed and the false is transparent represents a shift in perception that can be attributed to love.
For her part, Anna has enabled Dimitri to feel an experience that he had not experienced with his wife. In simply being, she has allowed him to feel something new and different. Anna has caused Dimitri to fall in love with her because she enables him to see what can be as opposed to what is. She allows him to believe in the beauty of ''everything except what we think or do ourselves when we forget the higher aims of life and our own human dignity.’’ This aspiration to something more than what is has caused Dimitri to fall in love with Anna.
