In the story "The Lady or the Tiger," the princess lived with a barbaric father in a rather barbaric country.  Her father gave her the terrible choice of what to do with her lover as her father was not about to let this man have his daughter, the princess of the land.  Of course, she managed to find out which doors concealed the tiger and the woman.  If she chose the tiger, her lover would die before her eyes.  If she chose the woman, her lover would be married to someone else immediately.  Essentially, the princess had to decide if she would follow her father's barbaric ways and let her lover die a horrible death, or if she could be more compassionate and let her lover live even though it would be with another woman. I've always believed that she chose the tiger!
