This is a truly interesting question because Krishna's relationships with his family members change throughout the book. First Krishna is happy living alone, while his wife and daughter live elsewhere. Then when Krishna is finally ready to welcome his wife and daughter, their happiness does not last long. He does spend a little bit of time being the father of the family, but then his wife dies. Krishna is devastated.
It is at this point when Krishna's role as father and as husband changes dramatically. While he still takes care of his daughter and teaches at the university, Krishna now learns to communicate with his wife first through using the help of a fortune teller and then by himself. This changes Krishna's role from literal husband to spiritual husband.
In conclusion, it is important to note that the change from literal husband to spiritual husband changes Krishna's role as teacher as well. He quits his job that he hates at the university and joins a staff at an experimental school which is run by a spiritual leader, or mystic. In this way, Krishna finds inner peace through the family.
