When Amir learns that his father was the biological father of Hassan, many events of his childhood that he did not understand at the time become clear to him. For example, he remembered that Baba always brought back gifts for Hassan whenever he traveled. He recalled that his father always remembered Hassan's birthday. The way Hassan and his father were treated by Baba, even as members of the lower class Hazara, was very unusual and Amir now realizes it was because Hassan was really Baba's son also.

Amir and his father are alike in many ways, even though Amir would not always have liked to think so. Both of them had cowardly pasts. Baba did not acknowledge Hassan as his son, which was cowardly, and Amir did not stick up for his friend when they were attacked by the bullies, and Hassan was raped. Amir never even told anybody what had happened.

You can find many other ways, especially at the end of the novel when Baba comes to live with Amir, that they are actually more alike than either of them ever realized.

There is a good discussion of this here on eNotes.

baba and amir share some of the same similarties. Its ironic how Baba never takes up for  amir and how amir never take up for Hassan
