In To Kill A Mockingbird, where is--The Courthouse, Tom's House, Maycomb Jail, The shortcut from the school, The Dump and Church located in Maycomb?
I have to create a map and these are the one's i need the most help on, please respond A.S.A.P.
Below are the locations of the requested places from Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.
THE COURTHOUSE. The courthouse is the main building on the downtown sqare, with a porch and clock tower on the south side, and large columns facing the north.
TOM ROBINSON'S HOUSE. It is situated in the Quarters outside the town's southern limits on the public road that crossed in front of Bob Ewell's house.
MAYCOMB JAIL. The local jail is also located downtown on the square on "a lonely hill... wedged in between Tindall's Hardware Store and the Maycomb Tribune office."
THE DUMP. It is situated directly in front of Bob Ewell's house, about 500 yards from the main Negro settlement.
THE CHURCH. The First Purchase AME Church, of which Calpurnia is a member, is in "the Quarters outside the southern town limits, across the old sawmill tracks."
THE SHORTCUT FROM THE SCHOOL. The school was just "around the corner and across the yard" from the Finch house.
This is a regular assignment to map the locations of TKAM.
Some specifics for what you've asked about include:
The First Purchase African ME Church (See chapter 12 for description) is out in the Quarters past the dump with the Negro cabins. The book alludes to three pulpits which means in town there are 3 churches but their locations are not specified.
Page 149-151 in the lilac colored TKAM book clearly describe the courthouse and jail and where they are located in town in relationship to each other.
There is a side street next to the Radley's that goes to the school. That's the kids' shortcut. They could go through town to get there but it would take a long time.
There are many examples of this map on the internet. But quite a few of them are not accurate and are incomplete. Go ahead and search and see what else you can find.
I think this assignment is great for Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel gives a number of specific descriptions, often describing the layout of the area from above or following characters as they move from one area to another in the story, which makes mapmaking a possibility. Of course, there are always a few details that will have to be left up to the mapmaker. For example, the dump is outside of town, but I'm pretty sure that the direction isn't specified in the novel. Farther away from the town, on the same road that leads from the dump, are the cabins where Tom Robinson's family and pretty much all of other blacks lives. You may remember reading about Atticus making the trip past the dump to the cabins or about the Robinsons having to walk along the same road and pass the Ewells' house on the way to and from work.
