Here is a list of the items that Jem and Scout find in the knothole of a tree.

  • A gray ball of twine
  • Two small images carved out of soap, which also resembles Scout and Jem
  • A pack of gum
  • An old spelling bee medal
  • A pocket watch that did not work along with a knife.
  • Indian head pennies.

Jem and Scout, undoubtedly, love all the items that they find. However, they believe that the Indian head pennies are the most valuable. They say that the Indian head pennies possess strong magic. Within their minds, Indians had powers and so coins with their representation also possessed powers. Scout says to Jem that these coins could confer things like a long life, health, and the power to do well in school. In light of this, Jem and Scout probably thought the pennies were the best.
